Booth sales on Saturday, 17. December

This Saturday, we have two different locations in town to pick up cookies:

Fells Hardware from 8 – 12.30: troop 77025, who is earning money for a summer trip to DC, will be selling just inside the door; the Fells owners will allow customers to charge for cookies

Stop & Shop from 9 till 12 and 12.30 till 2: troops 77023 & 71476 will be setup right outside under the overhang; cash only, please

(boxes are $4 each)

It’s Cookie Time!

Girl Scout Cookie Sales officially began yesterday (Friday, 9. December), so get ready to see the girls around town participating in booth sales and asking people door to door if they’re ready to support our troops.

Door to door sales will go from 9. December to mid January, with the cookies delivered in late February to early March.   Booth sales will continue into the spring.   This year’s cookie lineup is the same as last years and can be found here.

Each box of cookies is $4.   For each box of cookies sold, the troop receive $0.60 back which can be used to fund trips, pay for books & badges, and provide supplies for outreach projects.   In addition, girls earn $0.05 that can be used towards purchases at the GS stores or towards summer camp fees.   Of the remaining amount, the majority remain here in Eastern Massachusetts to help support council programs & camps.

I will be posting here on our blog upcoming booth sale locations & times to give individuals the greatest chance to help out troops from Winchester.   In addition, if you would prefer door to door service, please feel free to send me an email or leave a comment, and I will try to find an appropriate girl to swing by.

Over the next few months, I will also ask a few different troops to highlight their plans for what they will do with their cookie money to give people around town a better idea of what we’re up to.

JDL party in the Winchester Star

In case you hadn’t seen the article yet, the Winchester Star gave us a nice long article about our recent Juliette Gordon Low Birthday Party.

GS Convention Day 3

Today we’ve been invaded by a large number of local troops in the exhibit hall. The center stage has also been very very busy. Right now is the start of the “fashion show” which is beginning with a singer (who I don’t know…):

At 4 the exhibit hall will close for the last time & it’ll be time to head back towards Winchester. Hopefully all of the swag will fit in my luggage!

GS National Convention Day 2 – Evening edition

The hall has cleared as the various booths prepare for the Delegate meet & greet this evening. It seems to involve food based on the catering personal that are setting up:

A number of the booths seem to have decided to head out for the evening, but I would love to see a few more GSEM people today :)

Oh and live entertainment is provided:

GS National Convention Day 2

Here on Veteran’s Day we’re kicking off the morning listening to a Marine Corp pilot on the main stage:

(sorry she’s hard to ID–she’s the tall black woman in front of the stage)

There’s not much traffic at the moment, so let me wander & take some pictures of other booths:

Girl Scout National Convention Day 1

I’m here at the Girl Scout National Convention in Houston this week. The convention occurs every three years and this is the third one I’ve attended. I’m here not as a service unit coordinator but as the liaison from the Association of Women Geoscientists to the Girl Scouts. In that capacity, I have a booth in the exhibit hall:

The hall opened today at 1.30 and now at 5 it’s finally calmed down a bit, so I can take a few pictures & post. The center stage gathering area:

We’re tonight till 7 and the tomorrow starting at 9 again. If I can find time, I’ll take pictures of some of the fun hand-out booths tomorrow morning :)

Girl Scout 100th Year Celebration – 1912 to 2012

In celebration of the Girl Scouts’ 100th year anniversary, there are a number of ways girls & adults can participate.   On the national level, GSUSA is sponsoring several Forever Green Take Action projects during February, March & April:

Girls & adults are also encouraged to take the Forever Green Pledge (a number of activity options are provided).   Girls 13 & up can take the pledge themselves, while younger girls are encouraged to take the pledge in conjunction with a parent or guardian.

In our own area, the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts are sponsoring a number of programs.  Attendance at these events are open to all registered members of our council.   Registration is only $12 and is open to all girls in grades K-12 plus any interested adults.   Let me highlight two that may fill quickly:

  • 100th anniversary Camporee on the weekend of 1. – 3. June 2012: girls in grade 4 & up are invited to attend a huge camping bonanza at the Barnstable Fairgrounds; girls must attend as a “troop” but we can form a loose collection of girls if anyone from Winchester is there is interest–please contact Elli; registration is currently open & the cost is $35 per person for 1 meal, 2 nights at a campsite, a diverse program of events, and a badge
  • Forever Green event on 3. June 2012: a gathering of 4000 girls and adults from Eastern Massachusetts to celebrate the GS birthday at the Barnstable Fairgrounds; event will occur from 11.30 – 3 and registration costs $12 per person; a variety of events & performers will be offered including hot air ballon rides; registration will fill quickly, so sign up now!  If we have enough interest from Winchester, we will arrange carpooling

We will also be planning a few events specifically for Winchester, the first of which will be held on Sunday, 30. October 2011 in honor of Juliette Gordon Low‘s birthday.   Our party will be held from 3 – 5 PM at the 2nd Congregational Church in Winchester (485 Washington St., Winchester, MA).   All girls in grades K-12 in Winchester are invited as well as all current and former adult Girl Scouts.   Adults are invited to bring memorabilia from their time in scouting to share such as sashes, vests, pictures, and books.   We are asking for a $3 donation per person to defray the cost of the celebration, which will be collected at the door.   If you have any questions or want more information, please contact Elli.

Service Unit Meeting – Open to Public

All interested adult Girl Scout volunteers are invited to attend the first meeting of the Service Unit for the 2011-12 school year. The meeting is to discuss upcoming events that will be sponsored by the service unit, present changes in the national Girl Scout program in conjunction with the 100th anniversary, and a chance to socialize with other volunteers in town. We would encourage every troop in town to send at least one adult to the meeting, but the more the merrier.

The meeting will be held at the First Baptist Church in Winchester (on Mt. Vernon Street across from the Town Hall) starting at 7 PM.   We will be providing child care and the church facilities are handicapped accessible. Please park in the Jenks Center parking lot.

If you have any questions, please contact Elli Goeke, the service unit coordinator, at winchestergirls@gmail.com

Joint registration event

On 14. September, 2011 between 7 and 8 PM at the Crawford Memorial Church (34 Dix St.) there will be a joint registration event for scouting in town.   Members from the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts troop 507 and 503, Cub Scouts, and Venturing groups in town will be present to answer questions & register interested boys and girls.

Girls aged 5-17 are invited to join and be a part of the Girl Scout program.   There are several pathways available to participate including being part of a troop, participating in town-wide or council-wide events, attending day or overnight camp, or traveling with a Girl Scout group.

(Please click on the links above to learn more about programs for boys and the new co-ed Venturing crew.)

If you are interested in registering or have questions but cannot attend, please feel free to send an email and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
