In celebration of the Girl Scouts’ 100th year anniversary, there are a number of ways girls & adults can participate. On the national level, GSUSA is sponsoring several Forever Green Take Action projects during February, March & April:
- build a Rain Garden
- reduce plastic waste
- have an Earth Hour by turning off all lights on Saturday, 31. March 2012 from 8.30 – 9.30 PM (local time)
In our own area, the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts are sponsoring a number of programs. Attendance at these events are open to all registered members of our council. Registration is only $12 and is open to all girls in grades K-12 plus any interested adults. Let me highlight two that may fill quickly:
- 100th anniversary Camporee on the weekend of 1. – 3. June 2012: girls in grade 4 & up are invited to attend a huge camping bonanza at the Barnstable Fairgrounds; girls must attend as a “troop” but we can form a loose collection of girls if anyone from Winchester is there is interest–please contact Elli; registration is currently open & the cost is $35 per person for 1 meal, 2 nights at a campsite, a diverse program of events, and a badge
- Forever Green event on 3. June 2012: a gathering of 4000 girls and adults from Eastern Massachusetts to celebrate the GS birthday at the Barnstable Fairgrounds; event will occur from 11.30 – 3 and registration costs $12 per person; a variety of events & performers will be offered including hot air ballon rides; registration will fill quickly, so sign up now! If we have enough interest from Winchester, we will arrange carpooling
We will also be planning a few events specifically for Winchester, the first of which will be held on Sunday, 30. October 2011 in honor of Juliette Gordon Low‘s birthday. Our party will be held from 3 – 5 PM at the 2nd Congregational Church in Winchester (485 Washington St., Winchester, MA). All girls in grades K-12 in Winchester are invited as well as all current and former adult Girl Scouts. Adults are invited to bring memorabilia from their time in scouting to share such as sashes, vests, pictures, and books. We are asking for a $3 donation per person to defray the cost of the celebration, which will be collected at the door. If you have any questions or want more information, please contact Elli.
